Jamy from Seay’s Kopitiam asked me whether I really make money online with Google AdSense as she is not really earning any money from her Google AdSense ads. According to her reply to my posting, so far she managed to earn $6 from her AdSense ads. Thus, I think I am obliged to at least give out some guidances or tips for make money online with Google AdSense, as this is a technology and make money online blog that is dedicated on sharing information for make money online. Moreover, I don’t think this is some sort of big trade secret where you need to pay a tremendous amount of money to buy some e-books or online learning materials. So here is it, some basic tips that you can take to improve your AdSense earning.

Ad Placements
Ad placement is one the most important aspect for AdSense revenue optimization. If an ad is placed in an obscure spot, most likely you won’t able to generate any clicks from that ad, resulting in low income. The point to remember is “Always place your ads in highly visible areas of the page“. Nevertheless, the best placement for Google ads varies from page to page, depending on content.
Research shows that certain locations of a webpage tend to be more successful than others. If you refer to the “heatmap” provided by Google AdSense guidelines for ads placement, this “heat map” illustrates these ideal placements on a sample page layout. The colors fade from dark orange (strongest performance) to light yellow (weakest performance). All other things being equal, ad placements above the fold tend to perform better than those below the fold. Ads placed near to rich content and navigational aids usually do well because users are focused on those areas of a page. It is important to try to custom your ads according to your site while using this heatmap as a guideline to place your ads.
As you can see from the heatmap, one of the best area to place your ad is below the navigation bar at the top of the header. This is because navigation portion and the header always receive alot of focus and attention for a particular page. Therefore, it is best to put at least one unit of ad in the portion of header.
Another area where you should place your ad is at the top or the bottom of your primary content. For example, if you would like place ads onto your blog, you should place ad at the top or at the bottom of every posting. If possible, try to put at least one ad at the beginning of a post as this is where your readers will focus on when they are reading your posting. When your reader are done with your post, the focus will be at the bottom of the post. Hence, it is also a good idea to place an ad at the bottom of the post. In short, try to place ads where they are highly visible and they will be the focus of attention.
One good point to remember, to achieve good result, always remember to think about your users when you place your ads. You should experiment with different types of ad format that suits your site. Different ad format results in different click-through rate (CTR) and different earning. Check out all the different types of Google AdSense ad Format.
Types of ads to display
As a rule of thumb, wider ad formats tend to outperform their taller counterparts, due to their reader-friendly format. Readers absorb information in thought units (that is, several words at a time). The wider format lets them comfortably read more text at a glance without having to skip a line and return to the left margin every few words as they would be forced to do with a narrower ad. The wider ad format also lessens the likelihood of readers leaving the ad unit altogether.
According to Google AdSense, one of the most successful ad format for AdSense is the Skyscraper format. There two formats of Skyscraper ads, Skyscraper (120×600) and Wide Skyscraper (160×600). So where is the best place to for skyscraper ads?. The Skyscraper ad format is most suitable to be placed at the sidebar. If you refer back to the heatmap, the sidebar is another area where most of the attention is focused on a particular page. The CTR for the sidebar is much higher, thus by placing an ad there, most likely you will receive more clicks and make more money!.
Sometimes site owner tends to have too many things on our webpage. (Blog Tips : Clean Up your Blog sidebar) If you have limited space for ads in your site, then the best type of ad for you is the link unit. (check out all the different types of link unit ads) Each link unit displays a list of topics relevant to the content of your site, and when users click on one of these topics, they’re brought to a page of AdWords ads related to that topic. Though you won’t receive earnings for clicks on the topics, you’ll be paid for user clicks on any of the AdWords ads on the resulting page.

I agree with you abt skyscraper because I notice most of the successful publishers have skyscraper and that include you my highness guru :)-. I also notice ads beg/end of entry.

I started commodities investment in 2002; gold was abt $200+/an oz, Silver was $4/an oz; oil was $33/barrel. You would not believe how much work I put into my studies ! Just one of my stock that I like to mention here is SSRI (Silver Standard Resource).when I bought it in 2002 , it was $4 now it is abt $40 (gold was a bit down the last 2 weeks. so the stock has gone down a bit). So if you have invested US$4k in 2002, you have $40k now. And not mentioning a lot of my penny explorer stocks which I bought for 40cts, 50cts, now they are trading in the $8 to $9 range because they were being acquired by mid tier companies.
I hope one day my skill in $ online making is as good as my commodities stock pick skill. I believe I am a better than stock picker than Warren Buffet ! Ha ha ha, I am not too humble , am I ?

Yup, header portion, sidebar and at the top or the bottom of a post are the places where you should place your ads.
Ad placement has been the largest factor on revenue for me after picking a blog topic. It’s more important than most people realize.
Very true indeed. It is all about ad placement. Always remember to place the ads at the most obvious places to get the most attention, and hopefully it will convert into a click and earning.

My most effective placement is the 300×250 at the top of my post. I have never tried Skyscraper due to my site’s column.

I think it will not be as slow as u think.
Think of the number of flower shops, cards shops, gifts shops, churches (my own denomination would make up > a few thousand churches), funeral homes.
Truly I don’t understand why people glorified income from Payperpost etc, it is making $ on addition level. U get pay each post you write, u are not making $ through multiplication. It is compounding type of $ that I am interested.

Let me share my success on the google ads. My most income producing ads is the leaderboard 728×90 and link unit 468×15. Im expecting my check by end of this week. it took between 3-4 weeks to reach my address. While waiting for that, my adsense is already getting ready to be checked out again. Isn’t that great

for my blog, the 728×90 is the highest earned followed by 336×280
i try to place my ads in the top fold
the thing is to still get that visitor coming back even after clicking the ads, so don’t forget on the CONTENT part. being unique

One thing I found good about placing google banner ads in the header is that if the page is loading pretty slowly, the header usually loads faster and so readers can get to click on the ads if they decide no to wait to see the rest of the page.

Do you have a blog or a site?. If you do then maybe you can get an AdSense account and try it out by embedding AdSense ads into your blog/site.
If you don’t have a blog/site, then maybe you can consider starting a new blog by using free blogging platform like Blogger or register a new domain with webhosting.
I have a blogger acccount but I just do it as experiment. I saw some blogs under blogger account but they can modified the appearance of the blogspot to maximize the adsense space, is it illegal for google terms & conditions? I mean if I want something like that blogs, should i learn everthing (like HTML coding) from the beginning?
In short, I don’t really know where to start.

What is your blog url?. You can modify your blog template and the appearance of your blog. As long as you don’t modify AdSense code then it is ok.
Unfortunately, in order to modify your blog, you need to know at least some basic html codings. Anyway, it is not that hard. There are plenty of good resources online.
