watermelon

It is summer now. The best fruit for this hot and humid summer is non other than watermelon. Unfortunately, fruits are not cheap in Japan. It is well known that fruits in Japan are expensive. For an average income individual in Japan, fruits may not be in the weekly buying list. There are many types of watermelons available in Japan. The most expensive and famous is the square watermelon. Grown by a farmer in southern Japanese town of Zentsuji, the square watermelon is said to save space and can be stacked easily. A fat, round watermelon can take up a lot of room in a refrigerator, and the usually round fruit often sits awkwardly on refrigerator shelves. One square watermelon can cost more than USD100.

For a poor Malaysian like me, it is near to impossible for me to taste the square watermelon. Got myself a USD10 watermelon instead. So for USD10, what kind of watermelon that I bought?. As you can see from the picture below, it is slightly bigger than a normal 150ml soft drink bottle.

The question you might want to ask is the taste. The watermelon was quite sweet, juicy and nice. So am I satisfied with the watermelon?. You can get the answer by looking at the picture below. Just look at the happy face I made with the watermelon seeds. Haha. :D

Why fruits are expensive in Japan? In France a watermelon can cost around 6 euros depending on the session.

Hey do you mind I put this square watermelon picture in my French blog? I will link you. Let me know.

I was thinking on the farmer’s side, where they can plant more watermelon in smaller space & stack them efficiently during transportation … I guess the consumer has to pay more due to the space it would save.

Hi Bee Lee,
Those square watermelons are actually patented. So I think customers are paying for the patent cost and the space they can save.

Kuanhoong,

Is there any fruit in Japan that are cheap or they are all expensive, period ?

In Florida, there are plenty of fruits. Some tropical fruits are cheap here like oranges or citrus fruit (we all called the citrus state), watermelon are cheap too, water melon is quite cheap when it is on season, you can get a seedless big watermelon for US$3.999. We have lots of blueberries farm here. And we have lots of peaches from Georgia. Georgia’s peaches is very famous here. In fact, Tifton, GA has the biggest watermelon research center and the largest watermelon farm in US. One of our friend has his Phd. in watermelon (farm and research).
CA has the silicon valley, GA has the agriculture valley.

KH,
Stop flirting with aunty :):):):).

It all come to the bottom line of branding and war price.

You probably can find cheaper water melon is Vietnam or Cambodia.

Now my question is branding. I have to admit this is the 1st time I see a square watermelon. Yes, I will spend US$200 for a watermelon even US$2k , why ? it is the brand !

Ken and I talked about this topic before. I tell him never never go for price war. There is no bottom on price war, someone out there will always able to get a cheaper price than you but no one out there can copy your brand when you created.

Do you guys know that even after 100 over years, Thomas Edition company still receive royalty right income for all the inventions that he invented.

When you think of fried chicken, when you think of brand, you think of Aunty Jamy, ha ha ha ha ha ha :).

Wow, there must a reason they call me I am not a dumb blonde , ha ha ha ha.
