Use Social Networking to build Web Presence for your site

Hi!, If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or sign up for free email updates.. Thanks for visiting!

It is a total waste if you have a great site with great content but you don’t have the number of readers to appreciate it. Thus, one of the most common question is “How do I get people to my site?” While, the full answer to this question is complex, but the key is to make sure your web presence maximizes the chances for visitors to find you through the internet’s most popular search engines. Another good way to build up your web presence is by participating in social networking. Generally, online social networking involves connecting and sharing information with other like-minded people via the Web. So how do you use social networking to build up your web presence for your site?.

The latest trend to build up your web presence through social networking is called social media marketing (SMM). Social media marketing is a method of promoting your brand (be it your site, your blog, yourself, a product, a service, or a company) by strategically making your presence known across various social media networks (such as Facebook, Flickr, Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon, Myspace, Twitter, etc). The SMM goals will be different for every business or organization, however most will involve some form of viral marketing to build idea or brand awareness, increase visibility, and possibly sell a product or service. SMM may also include online reputation management.

You too can start your own SMM now. Basic steps to start your SMM :

  • Signup to relevant social networking sites and create pages that provide links back to your site (for both traffic and link popularity)
  • As part of SEO, create pages that will rank well in the search engines for low-moderately competitive terms/phrases
  • Build profiles on sites that can attract links, attention and contacts from other members (Read my post on “Brand your face“)
  • Be a part of the community. Contribute to the growth and value of social media sites

Well, the idea is nice, however, it requires good amount of time to invest in social networking sites too. You’ll need exceptionally good skills to make sure that you can manage all the networks pretty fast.

Hi TipsoSaurus,
You are not very clear of concept for social networking. All you need to do is to signup one or two social networking sites and add your RSS feeds into it. Everytime when there is an update from your blog, it will automatically update your social networking sites too. It is quite simple.

Don’t forget to add your RSS feeds into Jaiku as well - we tend to think of that as ‘lifestream aggregation’, pulling all the little bits and pieces you leave all over the web into one central location where people can add you to their contact list, and keep track of what you’re doing.

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for your suggestion. Yes, I added all my RSS feeds into Jaiku since Day 1.

Thank you for all the links, Kuanhoong, I always learn so much visiting your blog.

I was also thinking along Mayank view on this : ” it requires good amount of time to invest in social networking sites too. You’ll need exceptionally good skills to make sure that you can manage all the networks pretty fast.”

Should we concentrate on 1 or 2 where we find more suitable to our niche or should be spread ourselves think to all of them to expose ourselves ?

What are your takes on it ? or anyone who has ideas ?

Jamy

Hi Jamy,
Yes, you should concentrate on 1 or 2 social networking sites that best suit your blog.

Its a nice concept to drive traffic, but as Mayank pointed out, it requires a lot of time.

Hi Nirmal,
Yes, everything requires time. Nothing comes easy.
If someone can write a post that helps you to build traffic that doesn’t require time then it would sounds like a scam.

I am also a big fan of StumbleUpon. I recently decided to perform an analysis of StumbleUpon vs. Digg traffic and, I have to admit, I was quite surprised by what I discovered.

StumbleUpon beat Digg in several areas including bounce rates and pageviews per visit.

If any of your readers are interested, they can check out the complete post at http://www.dailycupoftech.com/2007/08/06/stumbleupon-vs-digg/.
