Hi!, If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or sign up for free email updates.. Thanks for visiting!
It is well known that to achieve higher page rank for search engines like Google, it is important for your site to have many inbound links that link to your site. This is because your site’s ranking in Google search results is partly based on analysis of those sites that link to you. The quantity, quality, and relevance of links count towards your rating. However, for some, in order to achieve more inbound links, it is common for many webmasters to participate in meme tagging or link schemes like Technorati train, Alexa train and many more. Some webmasters engage in link exchange schemes and build partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites.
According to guidelines by Google Webmaster for participation in link schemes, it is considered to be a violation of Google’s webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact your site’s ranking in search results. Examples of link schemes can include:
- Links intended to manipulate PageRank
- Links to web spammers or bad neighborhoods on the web
- Excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging (”Link to me and I’ll link to you.”)
- Buying or selling links
Solution
Sometimes, it is good to decline to participate in any meme tagging or link schemes. Even though you may gain more inbound links to your site in a short period of time, but excessive linkings from non-related sites will eventually lead to negative impact on your site’s ranking. The best way to build your page rank is to create good content and allow your readers to discover your post naturally. I am one who firmly believe the mean to the end is as important as the end.
Good one, stumbled !
Hi Jamy,
Thanks for the stumbled.
Wow. So what’s the secret for people who have post about meme? Since the process is unstoppable, should I erase the post?
Nice post. Thanks for sharing. I have stop long time ago actually… But I still have decent posts about meme from the last few months.
Hi Ken Xu,
I think it is ok for your old posts, but you should stop participating in memes.
I have stopped participating in these memes long back. Good post.
Hi Nirmal,

Good to know this although I have only done a few meme so far. I think we need balance in most of the things we do, if we do something in extreme, we would see the side effect of it

Nice to meet you too
Thanks for sharing this info.
I hate meme actually! No offence to those who do ok!
Hi FH2o,
Thanks for dropping by
Exactly, it is not difficult to find a chain of links passing between different blogs. The algo to find such a chain is not difficult to code too. This being the case, among all the PR manipulating techniques, this is the easiest for Google to detect and penalize..

Hi Anand,
Yup I do agree with you
Hey nice post there.. I’ve stopped participating in Link Trains long back
Hi Shankar,
Great to know you are not participating in any link trains
The more and more I hear about these “trains” the more convinced I become that they are a bad idea..
Hi Michael,
Thanks for dropping by my blog
I was so fancy about link-exchange, but now I’ll more concentrate on the content in my website. Btw, I heard that putting much ads in the blog will affect the PageRank as well.
Hi Sean,
I think what you are referring to is the paid posts. Yes, writing alot of paid posts will affect your pagerank as well.
I’m not a fan of memes. There are far too many of them floating around to be of any value to a reader.
Hi Angel,
It is true that there are too many meme out there.
