GIMP 2.6 open source image editor launched

gimp-2.6

The developers behind open source the image editing application GIMP have released a major update. GIMP 2.6 includes a number of changes to the user interface and tools and plugins. There are some changes and new features for this version of CIMP. It features changes to the user interface addressing some often received complaints, and a tentative integration of GEGL, the graph based image processing library that will eventually bring high bit-depth and non-destructive editing to GIMP.

Noticeable changes are the removal of toolbox menubar, toolbox and docks are now in the Utility windows, the ability to pan beyond image border and some other minor changes.

GIMP are now ported to the powerful graph based image processing framework GEGL, meaning that the interal processing is being done in 32bit floating point linear light RGBA. By default the legacy 8bit code paths are still used, but a curious user can turn on the use of GEGL for the color operations with Colors / Use GEGL.

GIMP 2.6 is available for download via FTP.

I don’t think Photoshop is a simple software. I am sure if you spend time familiarize yourself with GIMP, it will be simple too

I really like GIMP – it’s a free alternative to Photoshop. And I agree with you kuanhoong that Photoshop is not simple.

Thanks for letting me know about the update.

I use Gimp all the time. It doesn’t have all the features Photoshop has, but I think that is what makes it simpler to use. It does everything I know how to do to photos at least. Although eventually, I want to get one of those tablets. Hopefully it will be compatible with those.
