How to update Samsung Galaxy Mini GT-S5570 Android via Kies

Samsung Galaxy Mini GT-S5570 is one of the most affordable Android phones out there. One should not be deceived by its size as it is packed with many features.

Recently Samsung has announced that it will start rolling out the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for its Galaxy branded Android Galaxy S, Gio, Mini and Fit handsets line as well as its 7-inch Galaxy tablet. Handset and tablet owners in some areas will be able to download the update over Samsung’s Kies service.

Steps to Update Firmware via Samsung Kies:

Connect your phone via USB to your computer.
Run the Samsung Kies application.
Once connected, you can see your phone icon at the left bar. You may click on your phone to see there is an upgrade for your phone firmware.
Click on the Firmware Upgrade button. (Make sure you have backup all your data before this upgrade)
Firmware will be upgraded accordingly.

How to have Android 2.3 Gingerbread for HTC Desire

The latest Android OS for smartphones, Android 2.3 Gingerbread has been released last December 2010. However, if you are using HTC Desire phone, you might need to wait for some time for the official release by HTC. The good news is that now you can get the latest Android OS albeit unofficially.

Known as the “Oxygen v2.0-RC7 custom ROM”, it is now available for download and install to your HTC Desire. The following are some basic steps to install Android 2.3 to your HTC Desire.

The first step before you can install the latest Android OS, you need to boot your device into the recovery mode, on your desire, first enter fast boot by pressing power and back buttons from boot up. Next press power then with power to select and volume to go up/down, navigate to where it says RECOVERY. (Note that your device should be rooted and should be an unlocked device so as to proceed for further steps)
If you do wish to install this custom ROM onto your HTC Desire, you will require ClockworkMod recovery to flash the ROM. You can download the ROM Manager app from Android Apps Market.
Click on the ROM Manager and then select the Flash Clockwork mod Recovery option. This will install the recovery image and backup the current ROM on your HTC Desire. For precaution, you can create a whole backup of the current ROM which you can restore back anytime if you have any problems with the custom ROM.
Download the “Oxygen v2.0-RC7 custom ROM” from the web, and copy it onto your SD Card in your HTC Desire.
Open the ROM Manager app again, and then you need to select the install ROM from SD Card option and select the Android 2.3 Gingerbread ROM which you copied and then click on install it. Make sure to select the Wipe Data and Cache options before you install it.
ROM Manager will install the Android 2.3 Gingerbread on your HTC Desire within few minutes of time. During this time your device will flicker or restart automatically.
If you face any problems in a rare case then with the help of ROM Manager on your HTC Desire, just boot your rooted HTC Desire into recovery mode and then install the ROM via recovery directly, or you may go back to your previous ROM via “Manage and Restore Backups”.

Congratulations!. You now have Android 2.3 Gingerbread running on your HTC Desire. Fore any queries or information, you can consult the official XDA thread.

How to send photos/videos from HTC Desire to Windows 7 PC via Bluetooth

There are many ways to share files such as pictures, videos, and documents from your HTC Desire to other PC or devices. You can share via Bluetooth, post to Facebook, post to Flickr, send by email to Gmail, or post to Twitter, Picasa or Youtube.

In order to send photos/videos from your HTC Desire to Windows 7 PC via Bluetooth, it is fairly simple. Here are the steps that you can follow:

Before you can send files from your HTC Desire to your Windows 7 PC, make sure your Bluetooth is on and ready to accept incoming connection. In order to check on your Bluetooth settings, go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center and select Change Adapter Settings.
From there, right click on your Bluetooth Network Connection, and select Properties. Go to Bluetooth tab and select Bluetooth Settings. Make sure the “Allow Bluetooth devices to find this computer” is ticked. (You can switch it off once you have completed your file transfer)

You may want to tick “Show the Bluetooth icon in the notification area” in order for you to accept incoming connection easily. Click OK when you are done.
Next from your HTC Desire, go to HOME and select Photos. Tap the album where the photos or videos you want to share are in. Tap the Share button and then on the Share options menu, tap Bluetooth. Select the photos or videos you want to share and then tap Next.
In the next few steps, you’ll be asked to turn on Bluetooth on your phone and connect to the receiving Bluetooth device so the files can be sent. Tap on the “Scan for devices” to locate your Windows 7 PC. Once your PC is found, tap on it to send.
At the receiver side, right click on your Bluetooth icon in the notification area and choose “Receive a File”.
When your HTC Desire is able to connect your PC, the file transfer progress bar will be shown and once the file transfer is completed, a window will show the location of the transferred files.

That is it. Simple and easy. Have fun trying out.

11 ways to conserve your HTC Desire Battery Life

I said once and I will say it again, HTC Desire is a great phone. However, similar to any great smart phones out there, battery life time is one of the main problems for any users.

If you are like me, where I am totally dependent on my phone for email, social networking, web browsing, and other activities, then it would be a great dismay to find your beloved handphone could not keep up with your usage in terms of battery life time. With that, here are some of the tips that I have acquired via forums, websites and advices from friends, in which I have tested myself.

11 ways to conserve your HTC Desire Battery Life:

1. Reduce Screen Brightness:
HTC Desire has one of the best screen displays out there. With AMOLED high resolution display, it consumes most of your batterylife too. You can reduce your screen brightness via Settings > Sound & display > Brightness > Untick Automatic brightness > Reduce Brightness by sliding to left.

2. Disable Background Data syncing:
By disabling background data syncing, your phone won’t connect to servers to fetch latest data updates. To disable, go to Settings > Accounts & sync > Untick Background data.

3. Disable Auto-sync :
Settings > Accounts & sync > Untick Auto-sync

4. Disable WiFi:
By enabling WiFi, your HTC Desire will constantly looking for new WiFi signals, and this will consume battery too. To disable WiFi, go to Settings > Wireless & networks > Untick Wi-Fi.

5. Reduce Screen Timeout Interval:
Settings > Sound & display > Screen timeout. The default screen timeout is 1 minute. In order to conserve battery, you may reduce to less than 1 minute (15 seconds minimum).

6. Disable Bluetooth:
Settings > Wireless & networks > Untick Bluetooth.

7. Stop or Disable Unnecessary Running services:
Settings > Applications > Running Services > Select and stop any applications that you are not using.

8. Turn Vibrate Notification off:
No doubt setting your phone to vibrate will consume quite alot of your battery life. To disable, go to Settings > Sound & display > Untick Phone Vibrate

9. Turn Off Haptic feedback:
Haptic Feedback allows you to have your phone vibrate whenever your press soft keys. To disable, go to Settings > Sound & display > Untick Haptic feedback : Vibrate when pressing soft keys and on certain UI interactions.

10. Customise Intervals or Frequency Individual Apps Updates:
For any Apps that are set to auto update, you can customise or change the frequency or intervals for updates or simply disable background syncing altogether. Apps such as Stocks, Weather, Twitter Clients, Facebook Clients, RSS Feeds and POP Mails.

11. Use the Android Power Control Widget:
Starting with Android 1.6, you can use the Android Power Control widget which gives you the ability to quickly toggle WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, Data Syncing, and Screen Brightness.

Updates:

12. Disable Live Wallpaper:
It is nice to have moving wallpapers on the Desire, but if you think you can live without them then your phone’s battery will last longer too. To disable, go to Settings > Personalize > Home Wallpaper, and select anything other than ‘Live Wallpapers’.
