Now you can reply Facebook comment via email

Great news for all frequent Facebook users. The latest feature is that now you can respond directly to comments via email.

When you receive an email notification about comments, you can just click "Reply" and start typing a comment at the top of the email. Then hit "Send" from your email and your reply will automatically be added as a comment on Facebook without you having to even log in. Nice right? [via]

Facebook wants to fund Computer Science Ph.D students

Great news for all Computer Science Ph.D students in the US. Facebook, the most used social networking web service is offering fellowships to students pursuing PhD-level research in computer science that are doing research topics like data mining and social network.

The funding will come with a USD 30,000 stipend for nine months, and extra allowance of USD 5,000 each for travel to meetings and hardware.

As per Facebook’s blog:

As Facebook engineers, we are surrounded by engaging technical problems to solve. We’ve recently tackled efficient photo storage, distributed computation and crowdsourced translations, to name a few. While we’re working on inventive solutions on a daily basis, we can’t do it alone.

Today, we’re announcing the Facebook Fellowship Program to support Ph.D. students in the 2010-2011 school year who can help solve some of the biggest challenges facing the social web and Internet technology. We believe that the academic community plays a central role in addressing many of our most challenging research questions, and we created this fellowship to extend our involvement and collaboration with the academic world.

We are interested in a wide range of academic topics, including Internet economics, cloud computing, social computing, data mining, machine learning, and systems and information retrieval. Full-time Ph.D. students who are enrolled in U.S. universities and working on research in these topical areas qualify to apply for one of five fellowships, which will cover their tuition and fees and provide a $30,000 stipend in addition to conference travel and other benefits.

If you or someone you know fits the requirements above, we want to hear from you. To be sure our first fellows receive funding in time for the upcoming school year, we are working on the following tight deadlines:

Feb. 15, 2010: Applications for fellowships must be submitted in full.

March 29, 2010: Award recipients will be notified by email of their acceptance.

This is a continuation post from my previous on How to hide Facebook Friends’ Status Updates or Facebook Applications’ Updates from News Feed. Now if you have set certain status to be hidden, you can actually choose and select certain updates to be shown back in your News Feed.

To unhide, simply scroll down to the bottom of your News Feed and look for the “Edit Options” link.

From the Pop-up menu, simply choose which ever updates that you would like to be shown back in your News Feed. Click close when you are down. It is that simple.

Facebook allows login by username instead of email address

If you have obtained your very own Facebook username, there is a new feature, announced by Facebook today. Now you can skip typing the extra characters that comprise your email address and instead you can use your shorter username to access your Facebook account.

As per Facebook Blog:

A couple of months ago, we made it easier for people to find and connect with each other by using Facebook usernames. Beginning today, you also will be able to log in to your Facebook account with your username from any Web browser, mobile phone or Facebook Connect-enabled website.

You will still be able to log in with your email address. We just wanted to add a more convenient way to access your Facebook account. A username gives you an easy-to-remember web address for your Facebook profile so your friends can more easily find and connect with you. If you don’t have a Facebook username yet, you can choose one here.

I guess this is the logic thing to do.

The latest feature from Facebook is Prototypes. Similar to other beta testing services i.e. Google Labs, Mozilla Test Pilot, Facebook Prototypes give users a chance to test out cool new applications and functionality "going on inside the walls of Facebook" and to provide feedback to the who built the prototypes, directly.

To begin testing and providing feedback, simply find any application available in the Application Directory that is marked as "Prototype". Facebook is a great place to keep yourself updated with the latest news about all your friends. However, recently most of the updates that you find in Facebook are mostly Facebook Application Status, which is quite annoying, frankly.

If you are like me, there is a simple way to hide all those updates with just a simple click. Simply click at the Hide link at the top right at every update and you can choose to hide all the related updates belong to that application. For example, if you choose to ignore updates for Mafia War, FarmVille or other applications, you can choose to hide them from your Facebook updates. Simple right?

Have fun with Facebook in English (upside down)

Here is another fun thing to do with Facebook – you can now turn words on your Facebook page upside down and backwards.

To change your Facebook page to English upside down, just go to the language setting and select the English (upside down). Besides turning all the words to upside down, you can try out the English for pirate, which in currently beta testing.
