Read The Kanji is a simple, fun, intuitive quiz designed to help students all over the world learn to read Japanese through real life examples and sentences.

With Read The Kanji, no matter whether you are taking Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Level 4,3,2 or 1, you can accurately maps which kanji you know, allowing you to visually see your progress as you learn. Current Read The Kanji’s database holds over 7000 words and example sentences. Besides that, you can also adjust the quiz layout to best suit your own individual study method.

There are two versions of Read The Kanji. The free version and paid version. The free version includes the JLPT level 4 words as well as the phonetic sets. The purpose of the free version is to allow you time to see if this is an effective tool for you. While the full version which cost USD10 for lifetime includes the JLPT levels 3, 2, and 1 word sets.

In short, Read The Kanji tests your ability to correctly read kanji. Some readings are straightforward, others can be rather tricky.

Another good point of this web service is the words are sorted by JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) level, Read The Kanji can give you a rough idea of how well you can expect to do on the upcoming test. And it’s really, really easy to use.

Usage is simple too. Just enter the reading of the kanji in the text box, and hit the Check! button. It’ll tell you if you are right or wrong and set you up with a new word.

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (日本語能力試験), or JLPT, is a standardized test to evaluate and certify the language proficiency of non-native Japanese speakers. It is held once every year, on the first Sunday of December. The JLPT has four levels beginning at level 4 and progressing to level 1 – the most difficult. The Japan Foundation estimates that level 4 is reached after approximately 150 hours of study and level 1 after approximately 900 hours of study.

It was announced that the newly revised test would be administered starting in December 2009. However, due to the progress of the revisions, the introductions of the new test has been postponed until 2010.

With over 3 million people around the world studying Japanese, there is a growing desire worldwide for the JLPT to be offered more than once a year. Starting in 2009, the current JLPT will be held twice a year before the new test is introduced in 2010. In July of 2009, the current Level 1 and Level 2 tests will be offered, followed by all four levels in December of 2009. Testing in July will be conducted in Japan as well as in a limited number of locations in China and elsewhere overseas.
