Moblin V2 is an open source Linux based operating system which is optimized for Atom-based computer. Moblin has a common core of Application and User Interface services and APIs, which provide application developers a rich and consistent development environment across multiple device form factors.

Some of the nice features of Moblin V2 is that it has a much faster boot time. Besides that, Moblin V2 requires minimum memory usage and longer battery life. It will also feature a new user interface with a homepage called M-zone. M-zone is completely customizable for OEMS, which means you can expect to see more Moblin computers, especially from wireless carriers.

As per Moblin’s blog:

Moblin v2.0 Beta Feature Summary

New, visually rich user experience, optimized for Netbook and Nettops, building on the latest open source graphics technology, such as Clutter, DRI2, and KMS. The user experience is provided mainly through the toolbar and panels, available at the top of the screen.

The m_zone, acting as the ‘home screen’ panel. It provides instant access to your synchronized calendar, tasks, appointments, recently used files, and real-time updates from your friends on social networking sites.

Aggregation of your social networking content. This provides you with the ability to see your social networking activities on one screen, easily interact with your friends, and update your status and site information. Twitter and Last.fm are the currently supported social networking sites, with more to come.

A web browser optimized for the Moblin 2.0 Netbook user interface. Based on the latest Mozilla browser technology revised into a Clutter shell, the browser gives you access to the whole internet, as well as advanced features, such as video embedding and the latest Flash plug-in, while integrating seamlessly into the user interface.

A ‘Zoomable’ media player. This player brings your media collection to life as you zoom from viewing all media down to focusing on an individual picture, movie, or audio track. The media player can detect and index media on external USB devices, as well as UPnP devices on your network.

A user interface for connection management and an updated connection manager (ConnMan).

And, of course, support for Linux desktop applications. Moblin is built using GNOME Mobile Technologies and supports existing Linux desktop applications.

Nowadays there are many USB devices such as the mouse, keyboard, pen drive, webcam, scanner, speaker and many more. For linux, there is a simple command that allows you to display information about USB buses in the system and all the connected USB devices.

lsusb [options]

Options

-b

Show IRQ and addresses as seen by the cards instead of the kernel.

-D device

Only show information about the specified device. This should be given as a file in the /proc/bus/usb directory—e.g., /proc/bus/usb/001/001.

-t

Print a tree showing connections between devices.

-v, -vv

List devices verbosely. Use the second form for very verbose listings.

This command has many options of use for debugging device drivers. To make use of all the features of this program, you need to have Linux kernel 2.3.15 or newer which supports the /proc/bus/usb interface.

There are many simple commands that perform wonders on Linux-based system. If you trying to find out more information about all PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) buses and devices on your system, then this command will be very helpful for you.

The command is:

lspci

It is a command that prints detailed information about all PCI buses and devices in the system. lspci is based on a common portable library libpci which offers access to the PCI configuration space on a variety of operating systems. To make use of all the features of this program, you need to have Linux kernel 2.1.82 or newer which supports the /proc/bus/pci interface. With older kernels, the PCI utilities have to use direct hardware access which is available only to root and it suffers from numerous race conditions and other problems.

* If many devices are shown as unknown (e.g. "Unknown device 2830 (rev 02)), issuing the command ‘update-pciids’ will usually do the trick.

No doubt that the easiest way to identify your Motherboard model is by reading the information printed on the retail box or the User Manual (aka “motherboard book”). However if you can’t get hold of those information, one can take the “brute force” way by opening up your CPU to find the name or an abbreviation thereof silk-screened on the motherboard/on the side of the last expansion board slot to the left of the motherboard.

Anyway, if you don’t intend to open your CPU, there is a much simpler way to identify your Motherboard model.

From the terminal type this command:

sudo dmidecode | more

Dmidecode reports information about your system’s hardware as described in your system BIOS according to the SMBIOS/DMI standard. The typical information includes system manufacturer, model name, serial number, BIOS version, asset tag as well as a lot of other details of varying level of interest and reliability depending on the manufacturer. This will often include usage status for the CPU sockets, expansion slots (e.g. AGP, PCI, ISA) and memory module slots, and the list of I/O ports (e.g. serial, parallel, USB).
